Celebrating a Vision That Still Guides Us

Celebrating a Vision That Still Guides Us

Meth-Wick Community exists today because one man had the imagination to see something different.

In 1959, philanthropist Barthinius L. Wick set plans in motion and provided the resources to create a place where older adults in Cedar Rapids could live with independence, dignity, and a strong sense of community.

With support from the Upper Iowa Conference of the Methodist Church, his vision developed into what we now know as Meth-Wick: a vibrant, resident-centered community that has become an innovative model for senior living.

Mr. Wick valued connection, generosity, and compassion. These qualities remain embedded in our culture today. Although he passed away before the campus was built, his estate planning ensured his dream became a reality.

More than 60 years later, Meth-Wick continues to grow, innovate, and care for residents in the spirit he imagined.

Legacy Month: Continuing the Tradition of Giving

Each October, we take time to honor the generosity that built Meth-Wick and invite current residents, families, and friends to help shape what comes next. Legacy Month is about more than fundraising. It is about impact, gratitude, and leaving something meaningful for the people who will call Meth-Wick home in the years ahead.

2025 Focus: Brendel Pond Renovation

This year’s Legacy Month project is especially meaningful to our community: renovating our beloved Brendel Pond.

As one of Meth-Wick’s most cherished landmarks, Brendel Pond has been the setting for countless memories. It was originally built in the early 1990s and was last renovated more than 20 years ago. Natural aging and the area wildlife have now taken a toll, and repairs are needed to preserve this special space.

The renovation will also introduce modern pond technology, improve water efficiency, and support environmental sustainability.
