It’s a Tuesday morning at Meth-Wick Community, and the campus is already humming with activity. The Cooking Club is trying a new recipe for savory seasoned pretzels. Over in the library, the Music Therapy class is in full swing. Downstairs, the Manor Brew is a hub of friendly chatter over morning coffee, while set up begins for an afternoon party for residents celebrating birthdays. Later in the day, music fills The Manor as a local college entertains with their show choir performance, before the night wraps up with a rousing Game Night at Deer Ridge.
While every resident’s schedule looks a little different, one thing is clear: life here is far from lonely.
Why Social Engagement Matters as We Age
Remaining socially active in our later years isn’t just a bonus; it’s essential for healthy aging. A strong social life can:
- Improve mood and reduce depression.
- Boost brain health and memory retention.
- Lower the risk of chronic conditions like high blood pressure and heart disease.
- Potentially add years to our life.
In fact, a large meta-analysis found that strong social relationships are linked to a 50% increase in survival rates—a health boost comparable to quitting smoking. Staying socially engaged may also help protect against cognitive decline. One study found that social isolation can increase a person’s risk of dementia.
For older adults, the risk of social isolation is real—but it’s also preventable with the right environment and opportunities.
How Meth-Wick Supports Social Wellness
At Meth-Wick, social connection is woven into the fabric of daily life. Our 68-acre campus with multiple styles of living and a wide array of communal spaces make interaction easy and natural. Whether it’s chatting with neighbors in The Manor Brew cafĂ©, exploring a new hobby like crafting, or taking a day trip to a local attraction, residents have daily opportunities to connect, share, and belong.
“Staying socially active is crucial for our residents’ overall well-being,” says Eryn Cronbaugh, Director of Wellness and Recreation.
“We design our programming to reflect the interests of our community—from wellness classes and creative arts to educational seminars and outings. The goal is to help residents find joy and connection in everyday moments.”
In addition to regular events, Meth-Wick residents enjoy amenities including:
- A fitness center with group classes and personal training.
- Walking trails and gardens ideal for shared strolls.
- Worship services and spiritual study groups.
- Volunteering opportunities both on campus and in the community.
- Scheduled transportation for off-campus events and outings.
- A community driver is available to take residents to appointments, errands, etc.
Our monthly calendars are packed with programs, but participation is always optional—residents are free to engage as much or as little as they like. The key is that the opportunities are always there.
The Takeaway: Social Lives Matter
While physical health often takes the spotlight in senior care conversations, social health is just as important and deeply connected. Staying engaged can ward off isolation, support cognitive function, and bring more meaning to each day.
At Meth-Wick Community, we believe aging well means living fully—physically, mentally, and socially. That’s why we’ve created an environment where it’s easy to meet new friends, try new things, and stay connected to the world around you.
