Leaving a Legacy at Meth-Wick

Leaving a Legacy at Meth-Wick

Each October is Legacy Month at Meth-Wick Community. It’s an opportunity to focus on education and fundraising that allows us to continue the vision of Barthinius L. Wick.

Mr. Wick wanted to create a community where older adults could live together. Although he passed before his dream became a reality, the funds and plans he had set aside in his trust went on to become Meth-Wick Community thanks to a partnership with the Upper Iowa Conference of the Methodist Church (UICMC).

We are grateful for Mr. Wick’s vision and all that it offers our residents, their families, and our community today. That’s why every year we set aside this time to share the way we ensure Meth-Wick continues for future generations.

7 Ways to Leave your Legacy

Gifts both small and large bring Meth-Wick to life. Whether it’s benches that dot our beautiful campus or a new device for medical care, it’s clear that we’re surrounded by generosity.

How can you leave your legacy? There are several options outlined below. We suggest starting by consulting with your financial professional to determine the gift best suited to your financial needs.

Living Unit Refund

With one simple form, you can direct all or a percentage of your living unit refund back to Meth-Wick. This provides an easy way to share your values with Meth-Wick without disturbing your existing estate plans. To learn more, contact Teresa Dusil at (319) 297-8603 or tjkdusil@methwick.org.

Stock or Securities

There are favorable tax rules in place for those who wish to donate long-term stock or securities (owned for at least a year) that have appreciated in value. You don’t pay capital gains on the appreciated stock or security and there is no need to obtain an appraisal.

Cash

Gifts of cash are a straightforward and tax-deductible donation option due to Meth-Wick’s 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization status. If you prefer to have your gift go to a specific item(s), watch for our wish list in the October legacy newsletter.

Real Estate

By donating real estate, you forego the costs associated with maintaining, selling, or passing down property, while also contributing to Meth-Wick’s mission.

IRA Assets

The IRA charitable rollover allows individuals aged 70½ or older to donate up to $100,000 from their IRA directly to charity without treating it being considered a taxable distribution.

Charitable Gift Annuity

By purchasing a charitable gift annuity from Meth-Wick, you give a lump sum, but then receive quarterly interest payments on that amount for the rest of your life. The rate of interest ranges from 4.4 to 9.0 and depends on the donor’s age. According to a former Meth-Wick Community board member, a Meth-Wick gift annuity is “like giving away the tree but keeping the apples.”

Donate to the Meth-Wick Endowment Fund

The Meth-Wick Endowment Fund’s yearly income serves one primary purpose: to help provide ongoing care for residents who have exhausted their financial resources through no fault of their own. The principal in the fund is never touched, only the interest it produces. The generous support of the Meth-Wick endowment guarantees that the compassion displayed at Meth-Wick today continues for decades to come. As always, we are looking forward to Legacy Month and learning more about our generous Meth-Wick residents.
