Did You Know…?

Meth-Wick is known in the Cedar Rapids community for it’s landscape and care services. But there are a few fun facts about Meth-Wick that are not as well known. Did you know…

  • Meth-Wick’s unique name is a blending of the names of Cedar Rapids attorney Barthinius L. Wick and the Upper Iowa Conference of the Methodist Church (UICMC).
  • The monthly cost of care when the Manor building opened in November 1961 was $120, which included housing, meals, laundry, room cleaning, and medical care by a house physician during regular calls. The cost of living sure has changed in 50 years!
  • The Manor was the only building on campus until 1987. The building has since been renovated and now has 71 Independent Living (IL) units, plus 32 Assisted Living (AL) approximately 150,000 square feet.
  • Meth-Wick offers downsizing services as well as easy packing and unpacking services.
  • Meth-Wick is one of only two “Music and Memory Certified Care Facility Partners” in Iowa!
  • The residents of the various venues on campus each have their own resident government. The leaders of these groups meet at least quarterly to discuss campus-wide issues with administration.
  • Senator Edward Kennedy visited Meth-Wick in place of John Kerry in 2003 prior to the Iowa caucuses. A fire alarm went off during Kennedy’s remarks, but no one paid any attention.
  • It’s said that an entire horse skeleton was excavated intact when the site work was done for The Manor.
  • In 1990, a TV movie, “For the Sake of the Children” with Sarah Jessica Parker and Sally Struthers, was partly filmed on the 4th floor of The Manor.
  • The former activity center of The Manor was razed and replaced in 2011 with an extraordinary library with a large, comfy reading room, a hair salon, a handsome billiards room (Bill’s Pool Hall) and a coffee area with fireplace (The Manor Brew), which is a magnet for residents throughout Meth-Wick Community.
